How to Batik

How to Batik,
Tools and materials should be prepared to make batik:
1. Cloth (can be made from silk or cotton)
2. "canting" as a means of forming motif
3. "gawangan" (a place to hang cloth)
4. Melted candle
5. Pan and a small stove for heating
6. Liquid dyes
Stages in the process of making handmade batik :
1. Making batik designs commonly called "molani". Motifs that are often used in Indonesia divided into 2: the classic batik, a lot of playing with symbols, and coastal batik with natural characteristics such as pictures of flowers and butterflies. Creating a design or motif can be used a pencil.
2. After "molani", the second step is to paint with a liquid candle using the "canting" by following the pattern.

3. The next stage, covered with liquid candle the parts that will remain white (no color). Canting to the fine, or a brush for large parts. The goal is that when dyeing the material into the dye, the candle coating were not affected.
4. The first coloring process on the parts that are not covered by the candle with a cloth dipped in a certain color.
5. Once dyed, the fabric is dried.
6. Once dry, re-do the batik process of painting with liquid candle using canting to cover the part that will be retained in the first staining. Then, proceed with the second color dyeing process.
7. The next process, eliminating the liquid candle from fabric by putting a cloth in hot water over the stove.
8. After the fabric clean of candle and dry, it can be done again with the closing process of batik candle (using the "canting") to hold the first and second colors. The process of opening and closing the liquid candle can be done repeatedly in accordance with the number of colors and complexity of the desired motif.
9. The next process is the "nglorot", where the fabric has changed the color of boiled hot water. The goal is to eliminate a layer of candle, so the motive which had previously drawn clearly visible. This immersion will not make the motive which had drawn the color affected, because the top of the fabric is still shrouded in a thin layer (candle is not completely washed out). Once completed, the batik is ready for use.
10. The last process is to wash your batik cloth and then dry by leaving it before it can be used and worn.
